About the 5-Step Embodied Awareness Method

Originally developed at the request of the Indonesian Psychological Association in January 2005 after the Dec 26th tsunami disaster shattered the world community, the 5-Step method was validated by Dr. Hedva and Lisa Arman, faculty from Atma Jaya Katholik Universitas, Jakarta, training recovery volunteers in Banda Aceh, where 170,000 lives were lost while suffering from 30 years of civil war. The 5-Step program has been adapted to and applied in multiple cultures and communities over the years, including: Indonesia, Haiti, Canada, Michigan, Arizona, Massachusetts, Canadian First Nations communities, Central America, Brazil, Europe (Italy, UK), Africa, Philippines, China, and in 2022-23 for the TransCultural Psychosocial Organization, Cambodia. Content continues to be updated and developed as research in the field of trauma recovery, mass trauma, and disaster trauma expands.
You will find its results presented at the International Council of Psychologist’s Peace International Relations and Human Rights Symposium: Kos, Greece, in July, 2006 under the title from this work, entitled A Year After the Tsunami: Trauma Recovery Trainings in Banda Aceh; and presented at the United Nations Ethics Committee’s “Human Rights, Violations and Recovery: Body, Mind, Spirit Practices Symposium“, in 2008; and listed as Chapter 9 of the textbook Mass trauma and emotional healing around the world, (2009), edited by In A. Kalayjian, Eugene, Santa Barbara: ABC CLIO/Praeger- Greenwood-World Publishing (pages 151-178) as well as referenced in peer-reviewed articles.
